The cyberspace is quite dangerous if we were to use it recklessly without thinking of its consequences. Not only that, our personal data could also risk getting hacked if we aren’t careful enough.

Therefore, Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo said that the government will introduce a national cybersecurity policy in the first quarter of 2019.

The policy will be implemented in hopes to overcome international and local cyber attacks in Malaysia, including protecting netizens’ personal information.

In a media conference which was held after the opening of the National Cyber Security Strategy Development seminar, he was quoted as saying,

“The policy is being drafted by the ministry and we expect it to be announced in March next year. It will support our cybersecurity industry growth which includes enhanced cybersecurity incident response and digital forensics with data analytic capabilities.”

Other than that, he also added that the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia is in conversation with other ministries to “amend or introduce new laws”. These new laws will cater to matters relating to cybercrime and cyberbullying.

On a different matter, Gobind Singh explained that the decision to withdraw the “moratorium” on several acts, which were being reviewed, was taken based on the three security factors mentioned below:

  • Offences involving national security
  • Offences involving public security
  • Offences involving racial-related matters

As of now, he said that the acts will be implemented but the proposal to amend them is still in process. Ah, sounds good!

The cybersecurity policy sounds like a good initiative to protect our identities and safety when we use the internet. Share with us what you think of the new policy being implemented in the comments below!
