A Form 2 student from SMK Methodist, Nibong Tebal, recently tried to commit suicide after being accused of stealing a teacher’s phone. The girl who had hung herself is now declared brain-dead and is put on life support in Seberang Jaya Hospital.
So what led her to an attempted suicide from theft allegations?
It was claimed that the poor 13-year-old Vasanthapiriya was mentally harassed by her teachers. Three teachers had called her in to a room for questioning (which they then allegedly locked), and she was threatened by the teacher’s husband to have a police report filed against her if she did not admit to stealing the iPhone 6.
The teachers allegedly also did not allow her to eat nor go for a toilet break for the 5 hours when she was locked in the room. Her friends had said that she did not steal the phone when they were questioned.

The teacher and her husband later drove her to her house to meet her parents. The teen ran straight to her room, while her parents and the couple left to ‘sort things out’. That was when the teen hung herself. She was discovered by her father who busted through the door after she did not answer to his calls.
She was unconscious but alive, hanging from her shawl off an air-conditioner piping. She’s now declared brain-dead as reports mention that the girl suffered from organ failure.
She had left behind a suicide note that said in Tamil, “Teacher, I did not take your phone.” along with her final goodbyes to her parents and grandmother.

The girl’s aunt Vinothini Kalaivanan said her husband lodged the report urging the police to act on the teacher.

“There are attempts to shift the blame to the girl and the father when it is the teacher who caused this. We are providing legal assistance and also morally supporting the family at the moment and we will ensure the girl gets justice,” Malaysian Tamilar Kural secretary Satees Muniandy told Malaysiakini.
Police are now investigating this case and vowed to unravel the truth after questioning all parties involved be ‘fair to all’.
