The amazing thing about Malaysia is how we have such a diverse population with diverse cultures all in one place. Of course, food is one of the main elements in bringing us all together.
So, this amazing man by the name of Edward Soo, or better known as Ed, decided to make an event for Malaysia Day at his restaurant in Bangsar and hopes for people to join him.
Now, before you start thinking ‘oh, this is just another boring event’, check this out – Ed will be serving 8 types of very unique nasi lemak dishes and some special tuak (palm wine) cocktails.
The best part? They’re all FREE!
The super kind-hearted Ed tells WORLD OF BUZZ that he just wants everyone to unite and have fun together.
“Basically, the purpose is to celebrate Malaysia Day, which is the birthday of Malaysia and all things good about Malaysia. It is also to bring our community closer together.”
When asked about the reason he chose Malaysia Day of all days to host such a joyous occasion, Ed gave the most heartwarming answer ever.
He said, “It is the birthday of the country and you usually throw a party on your birthday. When I started celebrating Malaysia Day, one of the reasons (for doing so) was because we usually only celebrate Merdeka Day.”
“However, Merdeka Day is the independence day of Malaya but not Sabah and Sarawak. To be fair to our brothers and sisters from East Malaysia, I think we should celebrate Malaysia Day.”
Apparently, this isn’t the first time Ed has hosted such an event. The amazing man has been celebrating Malaysia Day since 2010 and had previously organised 4 street parties and 2 fund raisers!
Just last year, he opened up a stall giving out nasi lemak and tuak in exchange for some dance moves at Art Printing Works (APW).
Ed isn’t some world-renowned chef either. He is a man who juggles both his career and passion well.
“I am a lawyer by profession and have been in the F&B business for 15 years. I enjoy eating, drinking, the arts and culture, and living a good life!”
The lawyer loves food so much that he and his friends opened up a few restaurants along Jalan Bangkung in Bangsar.
It all began with Opus Bistro while Lucky Bo Cafe and Bobo KL are their newest additions.
“Lucky Bo serves local food for lunch and wagyu steak at night. Meanwhile, Bobo serves Mediterranean food and has a piano lounge with jazz performances every Thursdays to Saturdays.”
Though the awesome guy isn’t the richest man in Malaysia, he is definitely rich in values. Ed has set up this free event where the cost of food will be coming straight out of his own pocket.
While the food may be free, he hopes people will donate their money to charity instead.
“There will be no charge, but there will be a bowl for you to donate what you like to a charity of my choice.
“The nasi lemak party is an ‘open house’ invitation to fellow Malaysians – I feel paiseh to charge people.
“But, I also want to support various charities, hence the collection bowl. People can give what they want, or nothing at all.”
Ed is also adamant in giving his guests something new by preparing the 8 exclusive nasi lemak dishes.
“Be in for some surprises. You will have to come to experience it.”
If you are interested in joining the event, do inform Ed via Facebook so that he can estimate the amount of pax to prepare for.
