Recently, Malaysians urged the government to bring back the UPSR and PMR examinations for Standard 6 and Form 3 students after it was discovered that students these days are failing to master 3M (reading, writing and arithmetic).
Now, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek is confirming that UPSR and Form 3 exams (PT3) will not return.
According to a report by Utusan Malaysia, she said that the Ministry of Education (KPM) stands by its decision to abolish UPSR and PT3 in 2022 and will not reinstate the exams. However, she added that the proposal to reinstate the exams requires comprehensive views.
“We need to prepare overall views from KPM and we will prepare the arrangement of those views, it cannot be seen through one aspect only and (should be) bigger,”
“(This is because) our children are not laboratory rats for us to re-examine them, one moment there are exams and the next moment there are none,” she said.
Fadhlina also brought up the fact that former Minister of Education, Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid and several other parties recommended that the exams remain abolished.
The Ministry, on the other hand, has made various reaffirmations, specifically to strengthen classroom assessment including training for teachers.
“So, the affirmations at KPM’s level is to ensure that whatever decision we take cannot affect the children. We have a greater focus, especially the 2027 School Curriculum and the new Education Development Plan,”
“All these inputs, including the UPSR examinations, are already in the Ministry of Education’s engagement session, especially the new Education Development Plan,” she added.
