The healthcare system in Malaysia has been getting the praise it deserves for the past few months with many foreigners sharing the experiences they’ve had with our hospitals.

One of them is 75-year-old Paul Penders, who had to be admitted to Hospital Langkawi for one week due to severe nerve pain. He told WORLD OF BUZZ that he is originally from the Netherlands but has been living in both the US and Langkawi for the past 20 years.

In a Facebook post, he shared that he was picked up by an ambulance and placed in a ward where he got all the treatment he needed.

“I have been treated kindly with great care and professionalism. I got all the medicine needed including morphine and diabetic care,” he said.

“The food was good, the staff worked very, very hard, the system seems kind of computerised, and I got a big supply of medicine for use at home.”

Penders said that the cost of his hospitalisation cost a little over RM2,000, adding that in the US or in Europe, one pays the same amount for only a two-night stay at the hospital without all the care and medicine.

He said that the staff at Hospital Langkawi had even wanted to send him to Perlis for an MRI with their hospital boat, but he said that it was not needed in the end.

“Please stop complaining or being negative about a wonderful community hospital without checking the facts!” he said in his post.

“Langkawi has a great hospital. In every hospital in the world are issues and problems. Langkawi can be very proud of its wonderful community hospital. My great respect and gratitude for all these hardworking doctors and wonderful nurses. Thank you ❤️”

After seeing Penders’ post, our health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah congratulated the “hardworking and dedicated” staff in Hospital Langkawi in a Facebook post.

“My heartfelt congratulations to all our hard-working and dedicated staff in Hospital Langkawi. You make all of us proud. Thank you,” Dr Noor Hisham wrote.

Sharing with WORLD OF BUZZ, Paul Pender said that he now lives in Langkawi and runs Mujonso Botanicals, a company that seeks to combat diabetes by using natural herbs. After his mother died from the “horrible effects of diabetes” and being a diabetic patient himself, he said that he vowed to find a solution to treat diabetics naturally.
