Malaysia’s Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim (DSAI) and his wife, Dato’ Seri Dr Wan Azizah attended the premiere of upcoming movie “Anwar: The Untold Story” at Dadi Cinema, Pavillion in Kuala Lumpur last night.

The 90 minute film depicts the story of DSAI’s political struggles as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance between the years 1993 to 1998.

The Prime Minister was welcomed with chants of Reformasi (Reform) by around 250 premiere attendees that comprised of political figures and artists.

Amongst them were Deputy Prime Minister, Dato’ Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Communications and Digital Minister, Fahmi Fadzil and Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. Dato’ Sri Siti Nurhaliza also attended the event as she sang part of the movie’s soundtrack.

Local actor Farid Kamil Zahari plays the role of Anwar, while Indonesian actress Acha Septriasa plays the role of Dr Wan Azizah and Hasnul Rahmat as Tun Mahathir Mohamad.

The movie costed RM10 million to film and was directed by popular Indonesian director, Viva Westi and executively produced by Zulkiflee Anwar Haque or better known as Zunar.

“I find it hard to comment as there are episodes that I’ve tried hard to forget because of the pain and sadness. Azizah has gone through a lot, as have my children and friends”, said DSAI at the press conference after the movie premiered.

“Trying to fit what went on for 23 years into a feature film obviously isn’t easy, plus the cinematography is also excellent”, he went on to say.

Meanwhile, Dr Wan Azizah hopes that the film will be able to repel all the negative perceptions that have been cast against her husband over the years.

The film is set to be shown nationwide starting from May 18th.

It’s no doubt that DSAI and his family have been through A LOT over the decades as part of their sacrifice towards Malaysia’s politics, making this film to be much anticipated. We’re excited to see the end result of this joint collaboration between Indonesia and Malaysia’s creatives.

Will you be buying tickets to the movie?
