If you have been following the mandatory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for contact tracing, then you will no doubt have been prompted to register your details at every premise you visit. Or better yet, you’ve downloaded and set up your MySejahtera or SELangkah account, and have been using QR codes to do so.

Mysejahtera

Always use mysejahtera for contact tracing purposes, to avoid scams like these.

In which case, those of you using the official contact tracing portals could breathe a sigh of relief, as the Ministry of Health has warned that scammers are apparently using contact tracing as a way to obtain personal information from you.

The Facebook post outlined an example of how these scams work:

  • Would-be victims are sent WhatsApp messages, or will receive phone calls from these scammers
  • Scammers claim the victims have been in close contact with an individual that has tested positive for Covid-19.

The message goes something like this, according to the screencap provided by the ministry:

Kkm E1595721368679

An example of what the scammer would send victims.

As such, if you receive any such phone-calls or messages, you have been warned that these are likely to be scammers who are trying to fleece you for your personal details, or ask that you pay for a ‘testing kit’ to be sent to your home.

Ways to overcome it:

  • KKM urges Malaysians to use the MySejahtera app as it’s more secure.

So if you haven’t already done so, be sure to set up your very own MySejahtera account to ensure that you do not fall prey to these unscrupulous scammers!
