Culture shock is defined as the disorientation experienced when subjected to an unfamiliar culture, way of life or set of values. And it is absolutely normal for people to feel this when exploring new places.
One Australian tourist shared her culture shock moments while visiting Malaysia for the first time and it has locals in stitches.
The tourist, meanderwithmia, took to her TikTok account to share the aspects she found weird about Malaysia including how certain shops only open past 10am and how you can eat with your hands at restaurants.
She wrote, “A few quick things I found unusual when I first came to Malaysia! This one wasn’t listed but it was also weird that there were so many chickens at Batu Caves? Anyone else (found this weird) or was that just me?”
Among the things she listed were:
- Nothing (shops) open until 10am or 11am
- You get to eat with your hands
- Squat toilets and bum guns (bidets)
- Whatever this thing is (monitor lizard)
- And this is an orange, not a lime (referring to the limau kasturi served with mee goreng mamak)
Many found her conclusions rather mind-blowing, especially considering the fact that you can find Malaysian food at any hour of the day
Some also corrected her about the lime-orange confusion.
But for an overall explanation to everything she found weird, this person pretty much summed it up
