Last week, controversial entrepreneur and “singer”, Aliff Syukri expressed his excitement when his latest single beat Blackpink on YouTube in the Trending list, and he emphasised that Malaysians just can’t accept the fact that he is the country’s number one singer.
The majority of Malaysians find his statement amusing, but do those in the same industry share that opinion? It seems that not quite, though.
Aliff Syukri SHOULD NOT sing, according to local legend and veteran singer Awie, whose “hobby” of singing has harmed those in the field who take their careers seriously.
“This is not our hobby. This is our career and some of us have been in the industry for decades.”
Awie then said that instead of singing, Aliff Syukri should find himself other hobbies:
‘Go collect stamps, fishing, or catch butterflies. Those sound more like a hobby.”
The 53-year-old singer continued and reminded Aliff Syukri or anyone who thinks the same to STOP damaging the music industry as they (real musicians) need the industry to survive. As Aliff Syukri is already a millionaire, Awie said that Aliff should’ve just saved the industry for people who take things seriously.
“This is the industry that has been feeding my family for more than 30 years. If this industry is damaged, what happens to me? What happens to others who take things seriously?”
“#1 in Trending? They’re watching to mock you”
In an interview with the media, when asked about Aliff’s excitement about being the most trending performer on YouTube, Awie subtly told Aliff to get over himself.
“They watch the video to mock him,” Awie chuckled slightly.
He then clarified that it’s entirely up to the people who want to click on the play button to his videos, but he just wants to preserve the image of the industry for future generations who wish to get involved in the scene.
“Why aren’t you doing anything, Ministers?”
Awie took the opportunity to call out to the relevant Ministers who are supposed to keep track of the progression of the industry.
“Where are you, Ministers? Do something to protect the industry! Set up a team to stop outsiders from damaging the industry,” he said.
When asked about his thoughts on Aliff Syukri’s claim as the country’s top singer, Awie simply responded and said,
“Oh great. Good luck.”
Do you share Awie’s opinions about the industry and Aliff Syukri’s involvement in the music scene?
