As Malaysians, we are known to be a very studious bunch. Or at least that’s what our parents like to think. There’s a good chance at some point that you would have had the experience of going to a fabled place known as a tuition centre. If you had the privilege (or misery) to attend a tuition centre, here’s a couple of things that you may remember from that time…

1. Having to bring that bloody tuition card that you keep forgetting

There’s a lot of things that we have to bring along when we go to the tuition centre. Bag, tuition papers, phone (super important!). There should also be one very important thing that we should bring. The tuition card. And of course, this is the guaranteed one thing that we always forget to bring.

To be fair, it’s just a small piece of cardboard. How not to forget?

2. Hanging out at the closest fast food place

Whether it’s before or after class (or both), we have all become acquainted with the latest promos that the closest fast food place offers to us. Ok la, not just the promos but the akak or abang at the counter also recognises us after a while already. Growing teenagers need sustenance to keep us going as algebra equations can really make you hungry too, so it’s definitely a win-win situation.

3. Commuting back and forth to the tuition centre

It takes a lot of effort to go to the tuition centre. Lucky for those who stay a stone’s throw away from these places but not everyone is as lucky.

The time taken can be a couple of minutes or it could be more than an hour even but this is the price that we paid for good education. Thankfully, we had other motivators like…

4. Checking out the lengzai/lengluis from different schools

Let’s be real, this is the only reason why any of us didn’t mind going for tuition classes. Yes, that’s right. To scope out the eye candy lacking in our own schools. Cue the swoon!

Hormones running wild, we’ve all fantasized about at least one person in class.

5. Checking to see who ber-dating with who

In the wake of all the available people in the tuition centre, for sure there will be a magical occasion where two of them come together and start dating.

This is of course the point where gossip abounds and is truly the essence of why we all go for tuition. To observe the scandals and drama. It’s not school days without a little drama.

6. The 2 states of the classroom – loud chatter or awkward silence

This is a situation that many of us would be familiar with. There are only 2 infinite states in a tuition classroom. Loud chatter when people are busy gossiping or the awkward silence when everyone is busy doing their own thing – or dozing off in class.

7. Feeling sleepy 5 minutes into class

Generally, as youth, we are filled with boundless energy. Want to play video games? Can! Want to lepak after school? Also can. But as soon as we get into tuition class and the teacher starts talking, our concentration reaches a level of about 5% and our eye lids suddenly feel damn heavy wei.

If you’re lucky, you’ve managed to secure a good seat at the back where no one can see you fall asleep. Stimulated minds? Not quite.

8. That extra worksheet we get – that we don’t end up completing anyway

We get enough work at school but yes, going to a tuition centre means that there is inevitably more work for us to do. Yeap, those extra worksheets for each subject that were handed out.

Most of the time we had the best intentions to actually get the work done and maybe even submit it to the teacher. That glimpse of motivation however disappears as soon as we step out of the classroom!

9. Teachers who give the most accurate PMR and SPM tips get the fullest class!

You know how ‘rumours’ start going around – your friend tells you that they’ve ‘heard’ this teacher is really good at predicting exam questions. Plus, he’s good at teaching too! With his vast experience and magical powers of predicting questions, you can bet the class is ALWAYS full. Don’t book early, and you’ll miss out!
