The user-generated rating system was introduced in ride-hailing applications such as Uber and Grab to evaluate the overall satisfaction of the ride. However, some uni students tend to evaluate the service based on the brand of the car, which could potentially put the drivers’ rice bowl in jeopardy.

Recently, a driver shared his thoughts via the Facebook page of a local news portal regarding the rating system and how the university students’ selfishness are ruining their livelihood. Here’s what he wrote.

“For your information, if a driver frequently gets low ratings, which is below five stars, the chances of getting banned by the company will increase. Some drivers were banned because of low ratings and reports from university students.

“Such situation rarely happens when the passenger is an expatriate or a professional, but it happens all the time when the passengers are university students.”

The driver also attached a screenshot taken from a Facebook group, which consists of Uber and GrabCar drivers.

Here’s the brief translation.

“I’ve just dropped off a student from UM. The student said it’s very difficult to book a ride with Uber or Grab. So I asked the student whether he frequently rates the drivers with one star.

“The student told me that the maximum stars he and his friends have given were four, and even then, it was because the driver’s car was a brand new Honda Civic. Local cars were rated one star while a Nissan Almera will receive two stars because it is not glamorous enough.”

This revelation has garnered a lot of traction and prompted other drivers to share their experience. Apparently university students, especially those from USM, have a bad reputation and many drivers are boycotting them.

Unfortunately, this atrocious habit has also been confirmed by a university student.

Well, honestly it just shows how superficial some students are. It won’t hurt to rate them five stars as long as it was a smooth ride and you arrived safely, right?
