A new, viral restaurant in Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur, is currently under fire for having an issue with one of their former employees.

Mon Chinese Beef Roti Restaurant recently shared that the employee had been let go prior to a viral video of him wearing a cross necklace and a songkok simultaneously going viral. Many questioned whether the restaurant was trying to attract Muslim customers by getting non-Muslim workers to conceal their religion by wearing a songkok.

According to a report by Berita Harian, the management of the restaurant admitted that it was their mistake for overlooking the issue of the staff member wearing the cross necklace and shared that the employee had previously been fired prior to the viral video.

They also apologised to those who were offended and felt uncomfortable after watching the video as well as promised to be more sensitive so as to not overlook matters that touch the sensitivity of Muslims in this country.

Malaysians didn’t take too well to this as they believed that a person’s religion shouldn’t stop them from being able to make and sell Halal food.

“Seriously, have we become sensitive like a tissue? It’s a cross, it’s not like he spit in the food that he’s preparing.”

Cross 2

“Does wearing a cross make the bread Haram or what? If it’s a Muslim shop, they must have their own working protocols for him to follow. A necklace shouldn’t even be a problem. Pity him for having a stupid employer.”

Cross 3

“I don’t understand what the problem is if a Christian person wants to work at a Muslim restaurant. What’s the difference with Halal food being prepared by non-Muslim workers at places like KFC and McDonalds?”

What do you think? Should people have an issue with non-Muslim workers at Halal eateries?

Do feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section.
