Luxury fashion brand Balenciaga is no stranger to controversy following accusations of child exploitation as well as for releasing some questionably designed products.

Recently, they launched a towel skirt for RM4,300 as part of its Spring 24 Collection. The cloth is listed as “Balenciaga Towel Skirt” on the website and is said to be made of beige terry cotton.

According to the product description, the unisex skirt comes in sizes S and M, and there are 2 buttons at the waistline and an adjustable buckled belt on the inside. It sits mid-waist, is meant to graze your knees, and can only be dry cleaned.

The latest product has received a lot of criticism from the public as netizens claimed it was simply an overpriced towel. It seems that some brands have also taken to social media to mock the new release.

IKEA UK took to social media to introduce its version of the towel. In the post, they called it the “VINARN Towel Skirt” which costs only RM40 on IKEA’s website.

Unlike the Balenciaga towel which only comes in beige, the IKEA towel offers you other choices of light blue, light pink, and light grey and even shares a similar waffle border as the Balenciaga skirt.

“A 2024 Spring fashion essential,” the furniture retailer called it, complete with “#Fashion” in the caption.
