Over a year ago, Thailand removed cannabis from the illicit drug categorisation, allowing for the production, import, export, distribution, consumption, and possession of marijuana to become legal formally. This meant that residents of Thailand were allowed to grow marijuana plants and smoke cannabis within their homes recreationally.

However, it seems that this is all about to change as Thailand’s prime minister recently shared how he is against the recreational use of cannabis and that he plans to make it only for medical use within 6 months.

According to his interview with Bloomberg, the government is seeking to “rectify” its cannabis policy and the rampant growth of dispensaries that freely sell weed within a six-month timeframe.

“The law will need to be rewritten. It needs to be rectified. We can have that regulated for medical use only,” he said, adding that there cannot be a middle ground for recreational use.

When asked if there will be a compromise for recreational use, Srettha answered “no,” adding that problems arising from drug use have been “widespread lately.”
