A commotion broke out early yesterday morning as more than 500 people barraged a clothing store in Section 7, Shah Alam to purchase Baju Raya at a discounted price of only RM1.

When the store opened for business at around 10:30am, Shah Alam District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim said he immediately received a complaint about the chaotic turn of events.

He claimed that the uproar started when impatient customers rushed inside only to learn that the offer was only valid for the first 100 people to enter while the next 50 customers would get a free kurta instead.

It was alleged that even prizes of mobile phones were up for grabs.

It was clear at the scene that the store employees were not prepared to control the large crowd despite them warning customers to be patient over loudspeakers in fear of them breaking the store’s glass entrance doors.

According to customers, the store failed to advertised clearly that the early bird promotion was only eligible to the first 100 people.

Videos on TikTok showed boxes of clothes being thrown to customers and some netizens have even claimed that people were taking advantage of the commotion and were stealing goods from the store.

“Around 11:45am, due to safety reasons, the store management agreed to stop the store’s operation because they could not control the number of visitors present,” said Mohd Iqbal in an official police media statement released yesterday

According to the police, so far, no police report has been lodged by any party regarding the incident.

The police said that there were no serious injuries caused during the commotion although photos of an injured guard at the scene being escorted away was circulating on Twitter. Netizens have also claimed that some shoppers were seen pushing children and pregnant women to get into the store.

The people should not get “too emotional” over such promotions urged Iqbal.

“At the same time, business owners must be considerate and avoid creating promotions that could confuse the public to avoid similar situations from repeating.”

Hopefully this serves as a reminder for shops to be much more clear in regards to the promotions being offered.
