The Singapore Police Force (SPF) has arrested two individuals believed to have stolen 112 laptops from the National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS) earlier this week. One of the suspects have been charged in court on Thursday (30 March 2023) for housebreaking and theft while the other was charged the next day.

As reported by CNA, the suspects, Mohamed Shahrizal Shaik Mohamed, 30, and another suspect, Muhammad Fairuz Jasni, 37, broke into NCCS on 25 March 2023 between 1.42pm and 5.13pm. They then stole 112 Lenovo ThinkPad T14 laptops valued at SGD1088 or RM3607 each, with a total value of SGD112,856 or RM374194.

Both suspects were arrested by SPF on Monday and Tuesday, with the police also recovering 40 laptops and SGD16,000 or RM53,051 in cash. Both suspects face up to 10 years imprisonment and a fine should they be found guilty.

After the theft was made public earlier this week, many Singaporean netizens condemned the suspects for stealing from the National Cancer Centre of all places. In a discussion on the r/Singapore subreddit on, well, Reddit, the top comment reads, ‘To steal from the cancer centre, have you no decency?”.

Besides that, some commenters also questioned the lack of stringent security at the centre. One asked how the suspects were only arrested after stealing over 100 laptops, while another claimed that maybe the theft was an inside job.
