Nasi Kandar can be expensive, depending on the dishes that you have on your plate, so the prices vary. But how much is considered expensive, and how much are you willing to pay for a plate of Nasi Kandar?

For a Malaysian man who recently visited the Nasi Kandar stall at the food court in one of the KL malls, he had a shock of his life when he had to pay RM86 for his Nasi Kandar order.

Here’s what he ordered:

  • 2 plates of white rice (RM5)
  • a quarter chicken (RM11)
  • 1 fresh large squid (RM70)

In the Facebook group KL吹水站, the man asked if that’s the typical price in KL as he came all the way from Johor, and he wasn’t familiar with the pricing for Nasi Kandar here. If you take a good look at the receipt, the man was charged with the price of 2 squids when he only had one on his plate.

“The worker told me that the size of the squid was huge, hence the price. But the sizes of the squids were all the same.”

“Never go to Mamak restaurants for mixed rice”

His post was expectedly shared many-many times. Some Malaysians think that RM86 for a plate of Nasi Kandar with chicken and seafood is way beyond the acceptable price range, and one Malaysian even urged him to report this to the respective department.

“Report this place, I think this is too much.”

“I visited this food court previously. I was charged RM48 for a plate of mixed rice, with just meat and a vegetable. Might as well just go to the restaurant.”

“Never go to Mamak restaurant for mixed rice, regardless of how rich you are.”

“RM86? Might as well don’t eat at the food court.”

“RM86? Might as well go for a buffet for two.”

In the meantime, some netizens found the price of the Nasi Kandar justified and said that that’s just the standard price for squids.

“Uncooked squids cost you about RM20 to RM30, and that’s a huge squid that you had on your plate. RM86 is considered okay, as long as it’s not rotten.”

“You were willing to pay for it anyway.”

Fellow Malaysians, especially Nasi Kandar lovers, we understand that the pricing in the malls may be higher due to the rental and all, but do you think RM86 is justifiable? Would you have paid for it?
