PDRM Arrests 32 Men In Penang Believed To Be World Cup Gambling Bookies

The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has arrested 32 men in Penang suspected to be bookies involved in the 2022 Qatar World Cup football gambling activities. This was part of operations carried out around the state from 19 November to 15 December 2022 in conjunction with the World Cup.

As reported by Bernama, the men arrested involved 28 Malaysians and 4 foreigners, all aged from 20 to 50s in a series of raids under Ops Soga IX. According to Penang Police chief Datuk Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain, 19 raids have been conducted under the operation and it will continue to be carried out until the Qatar World Cup ends on Monday morning.

Mohd Shuhaily further asserted,

“Throughout the operation, police seized RM64,873 cash, 26 mobile phones and SIM cards, a laptop, a modem and seven betting slips,”

All suspects have been remanded for further investigations under Section 6(3), Section 6(1) and Section 4 (1)(d) of the Betting Act 1953. The Penang Police chief also urged on members of the public to channel information related to gambling activities to the Penang police operations room hotline at 04-2221522 or the nearest police station.
