As adults, we’re way past the stage of being educated and reminded NOT to litter. It’s only common sense to keep the places clean, regardless of where you are.

Just last night (October 26), local celebrity chef, Chef Wan shared an incident of littering via his Instagram post where he also expressed his disappointment and annoyance towards what he saw. The Instagram video was taken at an airport in Malaysia, where the celebrity Chef spoke to a woman and her family before they left for Terengganu.

What they left behind left Chef Wan in shock and disappointment – rubbish on the seats, consisting of empty bottles and tissue packs.

“Sad and pathetic to see our Malaysians just left their garbage and expect others to clean for them.”

In his post, Chef Wan said that when they left, they casually left behind the garbage, and what left him even more upset was how the public seemed not to care or be bothered by it. In response to that situation, he emphasised how, as Malaysians, we should be more civic-minded, especially in public places.

“Kita jaga kita. It’s not even that hard. The garbage bin was just in front of her. That was selfish and inconsiderate.”

This is not about showing off

Chef Wan also said that his posting may trigger some dissatisfaction among people who may think he was simply attempting to show off. But he made it clear that his intention was far from that, and in fact, it relates to the perception of others towards our beloved country.

“We’re going around the world to promote tourism, food, and the culture of our country. How can we turn a blind eye on this?”

He also said that if we don’t behave in such a manner in our own homes, then there’s no reason we should litter in public. Chef Wan ended his post by saying how he’s baffled by the attitude of some inconsiderate Malaysians.

“I simply cannot comprehend such an irresponsible behaviour.”

You can watch the clip below.

While we (mostly) have cleaners in public places, it is still not a justifiable excuse for us to litter in public and tarnish the image of the place, and our country. Be civilised and be thoughtful, because none of us would’ve wanted the same fate to befall our own shelters.
