A tiger was found roaming on a road in the Bukit Awan area, about 6 kilometers from Kampung Pagi, Ulu Tembeling, Jerantut.

Based on a report by Utusan, a 30-second video of the animal was recorded by a resident of the area, 34-year-old Izat Abd. Ghani, as he and two friends were on their way home from work at around 9:30pm.

“When the car approached the Bukit Awan area, we suddenly saw a Malayan tiger running on the road. We were surprised and the tiger crossed (the road) while turning towards the light from the car’s headlight before sneaking under the metal barricade on the right of the road, into the bushes,” he said.

None of them expected to see a tiger on their journey home.

“When this animal looked back, its eyes seemed to glow for a few seconds when it was exposed to the glare of the car lights,” 45-year-old Ahmad Hafizee Mohamad, who was also in the car, shared.

He also explained that tiger encounters are becoming a common occurrence for the residents in the area as, for the past two decades, the wild animals have only lived in the marginal forest near the roads.

Another resident of Kampung Pagi, 32-year-old Mokhtar Abdullah added that deforestation for the production of commercial timber are among the factors of tigers and other animals crossing into the human world to look for food, as their habitat is being disrupted and disturbed.

“The habitat of tigers and wild elephants are near Kampung Pagi and other settlements on the bank of the Tembeling River, because the habitats of these animals are already threatened,” he said.

It’s so sad to see such a majestic animal having to wander close to human settlements and scurrying away from cars as they’re losing their homes.

Why can’t we be happy with what we have and take no more of their space?
