Everyone deserves another chance to start over, and the Ministry of Religious Affairs is making sure of that.

Recently, Ustaz Datuk Haji Idris Ahmad, the Minister of Religious Affairs revealed that the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department (JAWI) and some NGOs will work together to rehabilitate the prostitutes in Chow Kit Road, Kuala Lumpur.

Not only that but the children born out of wedlock will also not be left behind. JAWI will help unfortunate children in obtaining legitimate and valid birth certificates, as well as other relevant documents.

According to Harakah Daily, Idris said,

‘If these groups of people are not helped, they’re likely to go on with the social issues in Chow Kit Road, not to mention getting involved in other crimes, such as drug abuse.’

‘How are you going to help them, exactly?’

Hartini Zainidin, the founder of Yayasan Chow Kit has since questioned JAWI on their methodologies when it comes to rehabilitating the sex workers in Chow Kit Road.

She also asked Idris to define his ‘rehabilitating’ as the sex workers’ community in Chow Kit Road needs help, and not another stereotyping.

‘JAWI sound like they’re waging war against the children and families in Chow Kit Road,’ Hartini added.

She further mentioned that JAWI should liaise with the Home Ministry department before everything else to provide documentation for the homeless children in the area.

Do you think it is a good effort from the authorities in helping the community in Chow Kit Road? Do you agree with Hartini that the homeless children should be prioritised first before anything else?
