Loneliness and rough patches are part & parcel of everyday life. So it is normal to sometimes wish that there is a special someone that we can turn to whenever we are feeling lonely or down about something.

Thanks to the internet and the prevalence of dating app usage these days, looking for a right match should be a walk in the park right?

However, this does not seem to be the case as many young people are finding it difficult to find a partner despite having the opportunity to meet new people at their fingertips.

In a Facebook post by Gags Malaysia, a question about this phenomenon was raised.

Kenapa orang muda zaman sekarang lagi susah nak cari jodoh sedangkan kita lebih connected dengan internet?

Posted by GAGS Malaysia on Thursday, May 26, 2022

“Why is it that young people these days are finding it more difficult to find a partner when we are actually more connected with the internet?”

A fruitful discussion

The comments section was interesting to say the least! While there were many jokes, there were also quite a number of insightful comments about the reality of dating and courtship for young people nowadays.

The comment that received the highest number of likes was one that said “Because we need to fill in a Google form”.

Google Form

This was a joke on how a Malaysian influencer made an announcement on one of her social media pages saying that she was looking for a partner and those interested need to fill in a Google form.

On a more serious note, many users quoted the abundance of choices as the ironic reason why it is more difficult to find a partner nowadays.

When there are too many choices, we become greedy, start having unrealistic expectations of how someone ‘perfect’ should be like and start acting like ‘joy buyers’.

Plenty of netizens also blamed the bleak situation on the pervasiveness of catfishing using filters.

Although we are more connected than ever online, connections may not be as genuine as there is much more freedom for people to curate and present an image of themselves that may not be the most accurate representation of themselves.

“The answer is simple… filters are the answer… they kill the connection”, explained a user.

Filter 2

Meanwhile, some netizens pointed out that it is merely a shift in priorities. Many people, especially young people nowadays, are less concerned about romantic relationships and marriage as there are more important things in life to focus on.

“Marriage is not essential in the search for happiness.”

Priorities 1

Do you agree that it is more difficult to find a partner nowadays? Why so? Let us know in the comments!
