The Malaysian minimum wage was last raised back in February 2020 from RM1,100 to RM1,200.

In February 2022, the Minister of Human Resources, Datuk Seri M. Saravanan has said that they will be adjusting the minimum wage to around RM1,500 by the end of 2022, according to Berita Harian.

In a parliamentary session on 14 March, the same minister has said that they will be implementing this adjustment “soon and not at the end of this year”.

In regards to that, Muar MP Syed Saddiq has sent a letter of complaint to the speaker asking for disciplinary action to be taken against the minister for “confusing the Dewan.”

“However on 14 March, the Tapah MP has said that the RM1,500 minimum wage will not be implemented at the end of 2022 as there needs to be more research done to see the actual needs of the rakyat and the capabilities of employers.”

In the caption, the Muar MP says that this U-turn is caused by “the elites’ objections.”

“You said in the past that you were going to increase the minimum wage to RM1,500 and when the elites start objecting, you make a U-turn. Is the lobby from the elites stronger than employee rights? I request an explanation in the parliament. When I was in the cabinet, the minimum wage is increased yearly.”
