These cosmetic products are said to contain mercury, which could cause damage to the kidneys, nervous system and skin.

In a live press conference yesterday, Health Director-General, Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah warned the public against the purchase and use of Glow Skin White-Brightening Cream, Glow Skin White-Sun Care and Rzac Beauty Creme 2, as these products were discovered to contain scheduled poison.

Following this discovery, the products’ notifications were immediately cancelled and they are banned from being sold in Malaysia, say reports from BERNAMA and NST.

“Mercury is prohibited in cosmetics products because it can be harmful to health. It can be absorbed into the body and cause damage to the kidneys and nervous system.”

This dangerous substance is said to be hazardous to children, as it “disrupts brain development of young or unborn children and causes rashes, irritation and other changes to the skin.”

Dr Noor Hisham cautioned sellers and distributors of these cosmetic products to immediately stop sales. Those who violate this regulation could face a fine of up to RM25,000, a maximum three-year prison sentence or a combination of both.

If companies continue to violate this regulation, “they could be fined up to RM50,000 the first time and RM100,000 for subsequent offences,” added the Health D-G.

Dr Noor Hisham used the opportunity to advise the public against using these products immediately and to seek medical attention if they are experiencing discomfort or unwanted effects.

Consumers who regularly purchase cosmetics are also encouraged to check the notification status of products at the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA)’s official website or by downloading the NPRA Product Status app on Google Play store.

So if you have any of these cosmetics in your collection, be sure to get rid of them today!
