For all Malaysians who have been eagerly looking forward to the annually gazetted Hari Raya public holidays, you may want to take note of this news!

According to The Star, the Malaysian government is now deciding whether or not our Hari Raya public holidays need to be deferred to a later date due to the Covid-19 outbreak in our country.

However, the decision has yet to be made, and the government is still awaiting opinions from the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department in charge of religious affairs. It should be noted that Indonesia has already rescheduled their gazetted public holidays for Hari Raya, given the current circumstances.

This comes after Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob was asked as to whether Malaysia would follow in the footsteps of our neighbour.

“It will not just be about Hari Raya but also on other matters such as the terawih prayers (special prayers performed during the nights of Ramadan) that the minister will discuss and propose.

“So, let’s wait for what he has to say. Let us start fasting first,” he said yesterday, during his conference.

In Malaysia, the first day of Ramadan will fall on 24th April this year, and Hari Raya Aidilfitri would be celebrated on on 24th May to 26th May. Indonesia on the other hand, has postponed their Hari Raya public holidays to 28th December until 31st December.

What are your thoughts on this development?
