Festivals and other cultural celebrations are often the highlights of our lives, whether it be a time to play around with your cousins as children or for adults to reconnect and affirm those family bonds. Unfortunately, a celebration always involves money, and not every family has the luxury of celebrating given the tough economic times we’re going through.

A teacher named Mohd Fadhli Salleh posted on Facebook about Puan Jaya, a single mum with three children whom he helped buy clothing and food so they could celebrate Deepavali. mStar reported that Fadhli took them to Giant two days before Deepavali so they could buy new clothes, and he also bought them several basic necessities along with food they could cook.

Once the lady had picked out clothes for her children, she approached Fadhli to tell them they were done. He had even overheard her telling her child, “Eh, this one is RM15, choose the RM12 one over there. The poor teacher!”

Realising she had only taken clothes for her children, he told her to pick out one for herself, noting, “That’s how mothers are. They’re fine if they have nothing, as long as their children are happy.”

He then proceeded to buy them some necessities like soap and toothpaste before asking Puan Jaya if she had any food in her kitchen. The humble lady shook her head, then asked if it would be alright to buy two chickens, one for that night and the other to eat on Deepavali.

While she picked out her groceries, Fadhli headed to the toy section to pick out some toys for the children. Dolls for the girls, cars and pistols for the boys were put into his cart, and as he approached the family, the boy who was with Puan Jaya’s eye lit up as he realised it was for them.

“I didn’t understand what he was saying. What I know is that his eyes lit up instantly,” Fadhli shared, adding that he then brought them to a KFC and waited half an hour in line so he could buy food for them.

Fadhli ended his post, saying, “She thanked me over and over again. She never asked for anything. I was the one who sought her out.”

“If you see the happiness and smiles of a family like I have seen, you would feel as happy as I do right now.”

That’s so sweet of Fadhli. Hopefully we never run out of kind souls like his, those who will always look for ways to help those in need. Be careful on those trips home from Deepavali, and may we Malaysians always support and celebrate each other!
