The student council of a local university based in Kuala Lumpur has come under fire for something posted on their Facebook page after a tweet began circulating among netizens this week highlighting it.
The post, which had already been taken down earlier this week, was a set of guidelines advising female students on how to dress in order to avoid getting sexually harassed.

A translated excerpt from their post reads,
“[The image] below shows examples of how to dress in order to avoid sexual harassment.”
The post then included an infographic pointing out various styles of outfits typically worn by women and what was wrong with them.

The infographic lists “tight clothing”, “tudung not covering the chest”, “exposed ankles”, “visible makeup (lipstick)”, and “short blouses” as don’ts.
The post received backlash from netizens, who pointed out that women get sexually harassed regardless of what they wear and their overall appearance, calling the student council out for blaming victims of sexual harassment. Others also pointed out that the university’s student council should instead release a guideline telling people not to sexually harass others.

In light of the backlash, a representative of the university’s student council has since issued an apology on Twitter.
