Did you know you can actually grow marijuana in Malaysia for medical and research purposes? The only caveat here is that you need to obtain permission from the Ministry of Health first.

The Chief Director of the National Anti-drug Agency (AADK), Datuk Seri Zulkifli Abdullah was quoted by Berita Harian saying there is a legal provision that provides the opportunity for anyone to grow the cannabis tree under specific conditions. He added,

“Recently I read about Malaysians successfully producing cannabis oil overseas. It would be better if the research was done in Malaysia itself.

“If we look at the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, the cannabis tree can be cultivated for medical purposes. That is why it is important to seek approval from the Ministry of Health first.”

He also elaborated that if the cannabis tree is beneficial for medicinal purposes, then those who are currently working on it and have the intention to do so should comply with existing rules and regulations. He stated,

“Maybe one day, Malaysia can be an exporter of cannabis oil, but based on the regulations set by the authorities.”

The public is slowly understanding the benefits of cannabis day by day. Hopefully, Malaysians will soon enjoy the advantages of the plant appropriately rather than going about it illegally.
