Let’s face it, whether you realise it or not, advertisements are a part of our daily lives. You literally see them everywhere; on billboards, while reading an article, and even watching a video on YouTube! However, there are some ads that will stay with us for a long time because of how catchy they are. If you’ve never sang along to them while they were playing, you’re definitely lying. Here are some of the most iconic ad jingles in Malaysia that are pretty hard to forget. How many of these do you know or still remember?
1. Nano Nano
“Sweet, sour and salty” is right because those are the exact feelings you had whenever this ad played. It starts off pretty catchy and then it becomes pretty annoying – mainly because it abruptly starts every time it’s a crucial moment on your favourite show. As much as this song used to drive us crazy, you have to admit that you used to sing along and do the dance too.
2. Gardenia Bread
You have to admit, it really is “so good you can even eat it on its own”! Uncle Slogam’s recipe is quite the bomb lah.
3. DiGi’s ‘I Will Follow You’
Need I say more about this? This was iconic for three reasons; that it has a yellow man literally following you wherever you went (though you might want to call the police if that actually happens in real life), how the ad showed off our beautiful homeland and a revamp of the classic song ‘I Will Follow You’. Kudos DiGi!
4. PaddlePop
As kids, hearing this meant the ice cream uncle was riding around the corner. Of course, that also meant that we would bug our parents non-stop for money to buy ice cream. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find the exact Paddle Pop jingle, but this alternative comes pretty close to it. Speaking of iconic ice cream uncle songs, our ever-famous Mat Kool jingle is worthy of a mention too. Though we searched high and low, the Mat Kool Kawanku song was never to be found. That’s okay, I’m sure it started playing in your head the moment I mentioned it.
5. Malaysian Idol
Don’t bluff, you were secretly quite excited when you heard we’d be getting our own Malaysian version of reality singing show, American Idol. Of course, the ads were as witty as they were catchy. Just listen to this mamak! Though my personal favourite is the one featuring the rotiman.
6. NTV7’s ‘I Feel Good’
If you were basically glued to your television during the ’90s, you will definitely remember grooving to this tune. In fact, sometimes you look forward to the intermissions so you could listen to the song instead. Similar with the few ads here, we couldn’t hunt down the real intermission ad, but we hope just listening to the smooth sounds of James Brown is enough to give you some #throwback feels.
7. Calpis
Pi pi pi pi pi~ Admit it, this was an ad that you loved to hate and hated to love. As annoying as this got, you’ve got to hand it to whoever came up with this; it’s forever ingrained in our brain.
