As a Subang kid, I’ve heard my fair share of Subang Jaya-related put downs. While Subang Jaya is by no means perfect, it’s still an epic town with tons of culture and diversity that you probably can’t find anywhere else in Malaysia.

People who live in smaller cities or the countryside just can’t appreciate how awesome this suburban town is, and make fun of us constantly. Frankly, it gets on our nerves.

So without further ado, here’s a list of things that people from Subang are totally sick of hearing!

1.”Budak Subang Jaya memang ada gaya

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard of the popular ‘Havoc’ song by  Joe Flizzow in 2013. You would think that 4 years is enough time for people to get over it and stop singing that femes line every time they meet someone from Subang, but trust me, that’s not the case.

Thanks to that song, everyone and their mothers have the impression that we overdress every day of our lives, when most of us are just constantly in T-shirts and selipar jepun.

2. “Everything is so expensive”

It’s true that things ain’t cheap, but living here has its privileges! You have ample opportunities to grow your career, education and even your social skills. Major companies and universities are based here, the dating pool is massive, and the events are all very happening.

Plus, stay here long enough and you’ll find the perfect eateries that are very affordable for those on a budget.

3. “Why are there so many hipster cafes?”

Why else? Supply and demand, bro! It’s not necessarily a bad thing tho because you can be picky and find unique places that cater exactly to your taste buds and current cravings. Plus, instead of just grabbing a Starbucks, you get to support local businesses!

4. “It’s too crowded!”

If you’re not immune to the hustle and bustle of a big city, then just avoid the crowd by staying clear of touristy spots or hitting those places at off-peak hours. It’s that simple.

Oh, when I say touristy spots, it means local tourists that travel from other parts of PJ and KL.

5. “Whats up with your accent?”

It’s not exactly an ‘accent’. It’s what happens when you spend your whole life surrounded by multiple languages, day in and day out! Hence, we have a habit of meshing up all languages in true Malaysian rojak fashion.

6. “There’s no green space”

This is a common misconception. Sure, Subang looks like a concrete jungle, but we pride ourselves for having multiple recreation parks. In fact, we probably have more parks than you think!

7.  “Subang people have ‘tribal’ instincts”

Ok, this has a grain of truth in it. It’s hard to explain, but native Subang people do tend to look out for their own. Joe Flizzow gets it though:

“Subang kids always have that thing, where they’ll be tight for life.”

So, if we act like we’ve found a rare Pokémon every time we meet another Subang person outside of Subang Jaya…

…it’s because we’ve forged some very strong ties!

8. “Subang people never want to leave Subang!”

“Why not move to KL?” or “Subang is so far!” we’d often hear.

Well, Subang Jaya was designed from the get-go as a self-contained township. Numerous mega malls? We’ve got it! Colleges and hospitals? Yep. Huge theme parks and extreme parks nearby? You know we have that covered too!

Not to mention, there is also a variety of mamak stalls and multiple nightlife spots. You literally don’t have to get out of Subang to have a great time!

Some people try to escape their  kampung to move on to bigger and better cities, but for many Subang kids that grew up there, they choose to stay there!

With everything you could ever need in such close proximity, why would we ever want to leave?
