The Thailand Police have arrested 2 Thai men after a shooting targeted a border security checkpoint in Padang Besar, Perlis, at the Thai-Malaysia border.

Berita Harian quoted Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain as saying that the 2 suspects, aged 21 and 28, were caught by Thai police in Songkhla, Thailand, on December 13 (Friday).

Razarudin shared that during the incident on December 12 (Thursday), 2 General Operations Force (PGA) officers were patrolling near the border checkpoint.

While on patrol, they heard several gunshots being released from Thailand and spotted the 2 men riding a motorcycle nearby.

The officers quickly reported the incident to their team for assistance. Thankfully, the suspects left the area, and both officers came out unharmed.

About 10 shots were fired

Following the incident, Razarudin said a police team conducted an investigation and reviewed CCTV footage from the location, which has since been making the rounds online.

He added that the CCTV footage showed the 2 Thai suspects riding a motorcycle from a rubber plantation. They were seen stopping their motorcycle, pulling out an automatic pistol, and firing approximately 10 shots toward Malaysia.

The suspects were later seen collecting the bullet casings before leaving the scene, believed to have returned to the rubber plantation.

They fired shots toward Malaysia to test the gun

Razarudin mentioned that info from the investigation was passed on to the Thai Police, who managed to arrest the suspects at a premise in Songkhla at 10:40 AM (Malaysian time) the day after the incident.

“During questioning, the suspects said they borrowed the gun from a friend and admitted to firing shots toward Malaysia to test it. The gun has already been returned to their friend,” he explained.

He added that the Thai Police are now working on tracking down the suspects’ friend, who’s believed to own the firearm, for further investigation.
