A 17-year-old teenager was killed near Pulau Merambong in Iskandar Puteri yesterday morning after getting struck by lightning while on a boat catching crabs with his father.

As reported by BERNAMA, the incident happened around 8.15am and the victim died at the scene, whereas his 60-year-old father escaped unhurt.

Iskandar Puteri police chief ACP Rahmat Ariffin said that the victim died while trying to get a buoy to pull a fishing net that had been installed a day prior, meant to catch crabs.

Furthermore, it was raining heavily when the incident happened and the victim and his father were in a boat powered by a 15-horsepower engine.

When the lightning struck the victim, the father was thrown to the end of the boat close to the engine. Afterwards, the father managed to pull out the victim by his hand before being helped by a nearby fisherman.

Rahmat confirmed that the victim was pronounced dead at the scene, with the case being classified as sudden death by the police.

The victim was from Kampung Ladang in Gelang Patah and was not schooling but worked as a fisherman with his father.
