The novel coronavirus is a very widespread disease that infects the old, the young, the healthy and also the unhealthy. Basically, nobody is spared from its claws, including newborns.
This 17-day-old baby girl was tainted with the virus shortly after she was born to her infected mum.
According to People’s Daily, she was transferred to the Wuhan Children’s Hospital shortly after she was born. The baby girl, Xiao Xiao, had an infection in her respiratory system and minor myocardial damage (heart muscle injury), according to the doctor in the hospital.
As her symptoms were not as severe, the doctors decided that it was not necessary for her to be on antibiotics and they waited for her own system to overcome the viruses. The doctor also said:
“She did not have obvious difficulties in breathing, did not cough or have fevers, therefore we only gave her treatment for her myocardial condition.”
On Friday afternoon (21st February), the baby girl tested negative in three consecutive nucleic acid detection tests. Thus, she was allowed to go home! The doctor said,
“She is now free from the coronavirus and also her heart disease. In fact, she grew larger and fatter while in hospital care.”
That is certainly good news!
Doctors fear that the coronavirus might be transferable from pregnant mothers to their foetuses in the womb as earlier in February, another baby born to a coronavirus-infected mother was diagnosed with the disease 30 hours after being born.
Globally, this epidemic has killed about 2,628 people while infecting more than 79,700 people. In Malaysia, about 22 people were infected but 20 of them have since recovered, while there are only 2 patients left.
Remember to take extra caution by keeping things hygienic no matter where we go to avoid the spread of coronavirus!
