Bird’s nest has always been a delicacy especially among the Chinese community because it is believed to provide many health benefits. It is highly sought after as a supplement to improve our health, which means that it can get expensive as it is produced from swiftlets’ saliva. If can eat means rich lah!
Traditionally, it is usually consumed in soup form where it is boiled with rock sugar, ginseng and other herbs if preferred. However, if you are bored of the same old way of eating bird’s nest then you’ll be glad to know that you can now enjoy bird’s nest in many delicious forms at this Penang cafe.
Perhaps you may have seen pictures of your friends savouring a delectable egg tart or eating some tempting jelly dessert in a vintage-looking Oriental style house. Well, this place is none other than 92 Armenian Street in Penang, which offers various types of bird’s nest goodies that have been winning over Malaysians’ hearts ever since they opened more than a year ago.
This upscale little cafe doesn’t have an obvious signboard so when walking along Armenian Street, the core of the heritage sites, keep your eyes peeled for a retro Chinese entrance with a board showing the traditional Chinese words, “Ying Chuan”. Kinda like a hidden bar!
Once inside, you’ll be amazed by the beautiful vintage decor that makes the prefect setting to enjoy the luxurious desserts there. Plenty of Insta-worthy opportunities here! Some of the must-try desserts on the menu include the signature Bird’s Nest Egg Tart, Bird’s Nest Mango Cake, Bird’s Nest Coconut Jelly and Bird’s Nest Tiramisu Cake.
The Bird’s Nest Jelly is slightly bitter despite it looking rather dainty with beautiful osmanthus flowers and Goji berries in the jelly. How many of us have actually tried savoury bird’s nest? If you have not, go for the Bird’s Nest Chicken Porridge that’s topped with extra bird’s nest for a light meal. Sounds delicious!
You must be wondering about the prices here since it is common knowledge that bird’s nest is pretty expensive. Don’t worry though, they are reasonable enough as prices start from RM8 for one egg tart but bear in mind that you are eating a superbly delicious version made with premium ingredients.
It is also advisable to make pre-orders for some menu items as they require time to prepare and might not be available if you order on the spot. They sell pre-packaged bird’s nest too!
As the Mid-Autumn Festival is coming soon, you can also treat yourself to some premium Bird’s Nest Mooncake in different flavours. Of course, these too require a pre-order of at least one day prior. Looks like an awesome place to check out when you’re there!
Okay, anyone wants to go for a food trip to Penang? Don’t say bojio!
