A former wushu coach was sentenced to 13 years in jail and 4 strokes of the cane by the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court today (August 7) after he was charged with sexually assaulting his 10-year-old female student in an incident 3 years ago.

According to a report by Kosmo, Judge Tasnim Abu Bakar made the ruling after finding 34-year-old Gjeblehim Bong Teck Fuu guilty, as the defence failed to raise a reasonable doubt.

“The court sentences him to 13 years in prison starting today and 4 strokes of the cane, and orders the accused to undergo counselling sessions during his imprisonment as well as police supervision for 3 years after completing his imprisonment,” Judge Tasnim said.

Based on the charge, he committed sexual acts against the 10-year-old girl, as a person in a relationship of trust, as he is her coach, at Jalan Klang Lama on April 13, 2022.

Therefore, the charge was brought under Section 14 (a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 and read together with Section 16 (1) of the same act.

What happened during the trial

The defence lawyer requested a lenient sentence for his client as he needs to take care of his mother.

However, Deputy Public Prosecutor, Nur Shakila Mohd Shariff, asked for a severe sentence as the offence had left the victim with psychological trauma.

“The victim is a child who needs maximum protection by the law, and the accused’s actions have exploited the victim’s weakness and trust. The accused has a trusting relationship as the victim’s wushu coach, and should have acted as a protector and guide,”

“On the contrary, the accused abused his position for his own lustful satisfaction. I am asking for a heavier sentence to warn the community not to repeat such acts,” she added.
