A newborn baby boy was successfully delivered after his mother was suspected to be infected with the new coronavirus in Wuhan, China.

According to CNA, the 27-year-old mother identified as Xiaoyan, was suspected to have contracted the virus earlier this month.

While being 37 weeks pregnant, the woman’s health began deteriorating, forcing doctors to perform a c-section on her as the baby was putting too much pressure on her.

Additionally, the mother could not get proper treatment for her illness while carrying the baby.

The surgery that the doctors performed was extremely dangerous as the mother had a fever and was non-stop coughing. The doctors also faced the risk of getting the infection themselves while operating on her.

Zhao Yin, the doctor who performed the surgery said that he had to wear two protective suits, a face mask and goggles during the one-hour surgery. What made it even more difficult was that the goggles fogged up, making it difficult for him to see anything.

“I could barely see or hear anything and I was soaked with swear,” Zhao said.

While the mother’s infection has not been confirmed, the 3.1kg baby boy was sent home immediately to avoid him getting an infection at the hospital.

“I just want my baby to be healthy,” Xiaoyan said.

Hopefully Xiaoyan’s test results will turn out negative and that she’ll be reunited with her baby very soon!
