It appears that Malaysians just can’t seem to kick the habit of littering.
So much so, that multiple beaches in Penang were left trashed, causing cleanliness workers to spend hours picking up loose food containers and wrappers from the sand.
The Majlis Bandaraya Pulau Pinang – MBPP took to their Facebook page to showcase images of the state of the Lone Pine Beach and the Golden Sands beach in Batu Feringghi.
They wrote, “This morning (18 April), the Penang City Council cleaning staff were stunned and shocked by the condition of Lone Pine Beach and Golden Sands, Batu Feringghi, which is full of rubbish.”
“There are still many irresponsible visitors littering the beach by deliberately leaving beverage containers (plastic bottles), food wrappers and so on floating around. This unusual situation is the result of visitors partying uncontrollably on the beach.”
It apparently took 10 cleaning workers 5 whole hours to collect and sweep up all the rubbish and to restore the cleanliness of the beach area.
“The Penang City Council hopes that this incident will not happen again and calls on all visitors to tourist areas to take responsibility for maintaining the cleanliness of the environment,”
“However, the Penang City Council will not hesitate to take punitive action,” they added.
We genuinely hope that local councils station enforcement officers at such tourist locations to help ensure that justice is taken against those who litter so shamelessly.
