If you were to ask the opinion of the public, one of the most popular Ministers in the Unity Government’s Cabinet has got to be Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook.
Besides the dedication he showed in performing his tasks at the Transport Ministry (MOT) and the various initiatives his ministry introduced that benefited Malaysians, many also praised the way he conduct himself in public, including his public speaking skills.
Fluent in three languages, namely Bahasa Malaysia, English and Mandarin, Loke recently shared his love for the national language, as well as some tips on how to master Bahasa Malaysia.
During an interview with a local radio station recently, Loke, who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Seremban shared how he become fluent in Bahasa Malaysia, which stems back to his days in school.
Posting snippets of the interview on his official Instagram account, Loke asserted that during his schooling days, from Standard 1 to Form 5, one of his favourite subjects was Bahasa Malaysia.
The Seremban MP added that one of the ways he picked up and mastered Bahasa Malaysia was by reading and speaking the language a lot.
For the latter, Loke said that when he was young, he read a lot of magazines, including the ‘Dewan Masyarakat’ published by Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka.
Recollecting his days reading the magazine, the Transport Minister asserted,
“The language (used in the Dewan Masyarakat) is very standard, a vernacular that is widely used, whereby all the sentences are very good.”
Besides that, Loke shared that he listened to a lot of news in Bahasa Malaysia. He recalled how he listened to the world news every night when he was studying in Form 1 in 1990.
Loke said that from 1990 to 1991, he was enthralled with the world news because the Gulf War between Iraq and Kuwait was happening during that time.
He asserted,
“So, watching and listening to the news is one of the ways to master a language. Reading magazines or the newspaper is also an excellent way to do so,”
