One of the most universal experiences that we have gone through would definitely be adding water into our shampoo/body wash bottles when it’s about to run out.

While it may seem like a smart move to use up every drop of shampoo in the bottle, a Taiwanese doctor has advised against it.

According to this Taiwanese medical practitioner, Dr. Hung, he has mentioned that there are 4 reasons why you should not add water into your shampoo bottles.

The 4 reasons are:

  • The ratio of soap to water would be inaccurate, lowering the effectiveness of the soap.
  • Long term usage of water + soap in a bottle could lead to skin allergies
  • Could lead to wound infections
  • Could potentially lead to hair loss

Dr. Hung has mentioned that every bottle of shampoo/body wash has been tested in the lab to make sure that the ratio and effectiveness is on par. Once the bottle of shampoo is almost used up, adding water to the soap in the bottle would disrupt the ratio causing it to lose some of its effectiveness.

Other than that, the water itself has many bacteria and minerals, and once it is stored in a bottle, the bacteria or mold could grow faster.

Adding water into the shampoo bottle for emergency use is fine but long term usage of this may cause skin allergies, wound infections and even hair loss.

Dr. Hung has advised the public to be more aware of their daily habits, especially if they feel itchy right after a shower or constantly having dry skin.

“The public could use this as a sign that there could be something wrong with the body wash used,” he said.
