The process of getting a valid driving license in Malaysia takes time and careful training because nobody wants to encounter clueless and careless drivers on the road. If you have a driving license, then you know the drill, where one has to take several tests and courses for the right to drive.

However, Malaysians were shocked recently when a syndicate was exposed for selling driving licenses without having to go through the usual tests and courses held at the Road Transport Department (JPJ). They were selling their “services” openly using social media and even had a website where interested customers could buy the licenses from them.

On their Instagram page, they try to attract customers by targeting those who are too busy or have even failed their driving tests too many times to use their services. Yup, because people who fail driving tests should be allowed to drive!

They also boast that their driving licenses are 100% original from JPJ and that buying one from them would ensure that the drivers would not get in trouble next time. They also assured interested buyers that they could renew their licenses without fuss and that you could even choose any type of license you want.

FMT reports that all an interested party needs to do is provide photos, relevant documents and personal information on top of paying the price and you could be getting your ‘legit’ driving license in just four days. Wah, that’s unusually quick!

These black market licenses don’t come cheap though. Prices start from RM990 to RM6,500 for all the different types of driving licenses. In fact, the prices listed are almost three times the usual amount one would pay to actually take the test for a license. But sometimes, people just love taking the easy way out! At the time of writing, the website for these black market licenses have been suddenly put under maintenance but their social media accounts are still up and running.

Hopefully all these illegal ‘duit kopi’ driving licenses will be eradicated as soon as possible to keep our roads safe!
