As Malaysians, we’re pretty lucky considering the access we have to different cuisines of the world. It’s easy for us to satisfy our cravings for different kinds of food with the plethora of restaurants available here.

If you’re a huge fan of Japanese food, this might be bad news for you. Just yesterday (19 June), on its Facebook account, Sushi Tei Malaysia announced that it has ceased operations starting 19 June.

“This page will no longer carry Sushi Tei contents and/or have any links to Sushi Tei.”

However, the reason(s) for its closure was not disclosed. Sushi Tei Malaysia also thanked its fans for their continuous support throughout the years. According to Sushi Tei official’s website, the brand debuted back in 1994 and has since made a global presence throughout multiple Asian countries. Prior to its closure, Malaysia had a total of 9 outlets of Sushi Tei, with the chains in Klang Valley could be found in:
  • Cheras Leisure Mall
  • Nu Sentral
  • Tropicana City Mall
  • Setiawalk Puchong

The one and only outlet in Sabah, which is located at Suria Mall and had been running for 12 long years is also affected by the closure as announced via Sushi Tei Sabah’s Facebook page yesterday.

“Rest assured that it’s only a temporary. Good bye for now and we will definitely see you again very soon! Watch this space and stay tuned!”
To those loyal customers in Northern Malaysia, consider yourself lucky as Sushi Tei also confirmed that their outlets in Northern Malaysia are NOT affected by the closure, and their operations are expected to continue as usual.
Here are the outlets that are not affected by the closure:
  • Gurney Plaza & Queensbay Mall, Penang
  • Ipoh Parade, Perak

Despite not being entirely closed, many Malaysians, especially the fans of the place expressed their sadness to see a huge portion of the brand ceasing its operations.

The Singapore-originated brand has garnered a huge fanbase in Malaysia, and while the outlets in Klang Valley have closed their doors, we always have other choices when it comes to Japanese food. Regardless, are you sad to see them go? What’s your favorite food in Sushi Tei?
