Hoarding disorder is no laughing matter, as it’s a serious health mental condition that could impair daily life. A recent example is the viral story of an elderly woman who’s living at a flat in Woodlands, Singapore.
As shared by Shin Min Daily News, the woman has been hoarding items for more than a decade that her flat is literally full, to the point that she has to sleep on a piece of cardboard at the corridor outside.
The report says that the woman owns the flat and lives there alone, with occasional visits from her brother.
Furthermore, despite being persuaded to stop hoarding items, she continues to do so, with the hoarding affecting her neighbours at Block 603 Woodlands Drive too.
With the flat being full, the woman even hoarded item at the outside corridor, limiting space for others to use the common area. Moreover, the items also attracts rats and cockroaches which also goes to the neighbouring units.
Worse, the hoarded items once even caught fire and caused a power outage in the block which thankfully was put out quickly by the neighbours.
Despite all that, many neighbours took pity to her condition and bring her food. One neighbour even helps her maintain personal hygiene by giving her a haircut every now and then.
There are also volunteers who visit the woman from time to time to check up on and help her.
