An ongoing event currently being held at Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre has drawn controversy and debate among residents of the country after photographs of a set of toilets at the building went viral.
Circulating on social media, including in this post on the Suara Kita SG Facebook group, the toilets at the convention centre are temporarily designated as “gender-neural” rather than being separated by gender.
The gender-neutral toilets were apparently introduced temporarily by Wikimedia Foundation for the Wikimania 2023 event at the convention centre from 16 to 19 August 2023.
Based on the event’s website, the international event is advocating an inclusive approach to some minority groups in society, which include making modifications to the toilets.
Besides that, Wikimania 2023 also made rooms scent-free for individuals with sensitivities or allergies to scent, designated staff members and volunteers to help participants and designated a quiet room for anyone who may need it.
Of course, the main controversy has got to be the gender-neutral toilets, with some lamenting how Singapore is allegedly turning “woke”, while others see no problems with the facilities.
In comments on the photo on Facebook, one commenter said that she was shocked by the gender-neutral toilets, while another commenter lamented the need to bring such a “culture” to Singapore as it’s fixing something that ain’t broken.
Besides that, one commenter said that such toilets would allow for more spy cam incidents to happen in the country.
On the flip side, one netizen asked people to relax as no one is forcing them to use the toilets. Meanwhile, another commenter said that Singapore needs more gender-neutral toilets and just make cubicles ceiling to floor and have more cubicles.
Besides that, one commenter pointed out that the controversy is unwarranted as the event transformed toilets for the differently-abled (OKU) into gender-neutral toilets, which has always been for both genders.
