It is truly unfortunate that there are so many simple pleasures in life that the disabled community cannot enjoy, one of which is cycling.
According to a retired 62-year-old police officer named Ramli Aziz from Jerteh, Terengganu, the majority of bicycles on the market are not suitable for those with disabilities.
The former policeman decided to do something to rectify the issue by building an OKU-friendly tricycle made 100% of recyclable materials!
Based on a report by Astro Awani, Ramli had lost his leg 18 years ago to vascular failure and created a tricycle (with two wheels in front of the tricycle and one wheel behind) using second-hand items so that those with disabilities can cycle in public places.
“I built this tricycle in six days, less than two weeks. What takes time is forming the idea of how to build this trike so that it works well,”
“Even though I only used recycled materials, InsyaAllah, this tricycle can be used by the disabled,” he said.
Ramli had often participated in extreme activities including climbing and tearing it up in four-wheel-drive vehicles. He even joined a remote control aircraft club while he was still in service.
Now, he hopes to improve his creation and produce more useful tools from recycled items for the convenience of others like him.
Despite not having a formal education, Ramli used his real-life experiences which he shares with his friends, to create something that is beneficial to society.
He is truly an inspiration to us all. We can’t wait to see how his creations empower the disabled community in Malaysia!
