Pregnancy is beautiful because it brings new life into this world. Unfortunately in this scenario, two lives were taken instead.
In this heartbreaking story, a pregnant woman in Indonesia was neglected treatment by a total of seven hospitals.
The woman, Hartina, died with her baby still in her womb as she was not given immediate medical attention and treatment.
According to Harian Metro, a portal known as Kompas reported that the incident happened when Hartina was about to give birth.
The seven hospitals that rejected her were Bantaeng Hospital, Jeneponto Hospital, Takalar Hospital, Labuang Baji Hospital, Kartini Hospital, Ananda Hospital, and Pelamoni Hospital.
Hartina’s relative, Haerul, explained that she was initially taken to the Bonto Bangun Community Health Center (Puskesmas), Bulukumba.
“Initially Hartina was sent to Puskesmas Bontobangun Bulukumba but her case was referred to Bantaeng Hospital. However, Bantaeng Hospital refused to accept her as soon as she arrived at the entrance,” he said.
“After that, we took her to Jeneponto Hospital and Takalar Hospital, but was also rejected for further treatment,” he said.
According to Haerul, Hartina was later rushed to Labuang Baji Makassar Hospital but was rejected once more for not performing the Covid-19 screening test. They received the same treatment in Kartini Hospital on the grounds that there was no Intensive Care Unit (ICU) facility. They were then lastly rejected at Ananda Hospital.
Hartina finally received treatment at Pelamoni Hospital. “However, she was only given oxygen and anti-seizure assistance while in the ambulance.”
“She was not taken down from the ambulance. Instead, she was taken to Wahidin Hospital but died before being placed in the maternity ward,” he said.
According to him, their family regrets the situation.
“From the village to the town we tried to get treatment but the hospitals were so inconsiderate. What if this were their family members that suffered the same fate?” he said.
Meanwhile, Ananda Hospital Medical Services Manager, Fira said, the hospital does not have intensive facilities for Hartina. “When she arrived at the hospital, the doctor tried to examine Hartina in the vehicle and found her in a convulsion and had high blood pressure,” she said.
“In such a situation, we felt that she needed intensive care equipment that is not available at our hospital. Because of that, we asked Hartina’s family members to refer her to Labuang Baji Hospital,” she explained.
Meanwhile, the Head of Medical Management Services of Bantaeng Hospital, Dr Hikmawati denied accepting the arrival of a patient named Hartina.
“We have checked the attendance record but no patient named Hartina was registered. If there is, of course the information would be in our records,” he said.
