Most of us are aware that corruption and bribery are extremely common and treated as the norm in our country. However, it seems that now, news of the widespread corruption in Malaysia has spread to other parts of the world.

Recently, a netizen took to Twitter to share a scene from Indian Malayalam movie ‘Kaduva’ where one of the actors mention that a Malaysian company offered to bribe for the importation of palm oil.

“Just like that, the dignity of the country is stepped on,” wrote the netizen.

Not the first time

The post has gone viral on Twitter and other netizens began to share other instances where Malaysia was featured in other international works for all the wrong reasons.

One user pointed to a scene in video game ‘Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End’ where one of the characters explained how the Malaysian permit office was bribed.

“Watch the drama Blacklist. (In it) they mentioned several times that Malaysia is involved in money laundering, human trafficking and gangsterism,” commented another netizen.

Meanwhile, another user brought up a video from 2017 where the ex-Prime Minister of Kenya Raila Odinga, who used the instances of corruption in both Nigeria and Malaysia as a subject to highlight the link between corruption and development crisis at a conference in his country.

Exporting the corruption culture

Several users took to the post to express their disappointment at how other countries seem to perceive us all because of the corruption that goes around.

“I love it when script writers do their research, for accuracy,” a netizen said sarcastically.

One user highlighted how other countries export their best traits whilst all we do is export our culture of corruption.

Another user commented, “Well a lot of leaders and those at the bottom are involved with bribery, so it has become part of Malaysian culture. Other countries see it, and they just highlight it.”

What do you think? Is it an unfair portrayal of the country or is it pretty spot on?
