“Eh bro, can help me tapao satay, ah?”
“How many you want?”
“Like ten sticks, liddat.”
“Can lah.”
These are conversations that we hear and language we use everyday, and it has become so normal to us to speak Manglish that we don’t even realise how culturally saturated our language is. Some can’t even hold a conversation properly without speaking in that manner, which I think is incredibly beautiful.
That’s right, I’m talking about our Malaysian accent. With so many people from different races living in our country, we have all influenced the common language that we speak in some way or another. Some might call it unique, some might think it’s hard to understand, while some actually think it’s sexy!
Really, meh? Malaysian accent, sexy? Evidently, yes!
According to a travel website called Big 7 Travel, the Malaysian accent was ranked the 39th sexiest accent in the world! Wahh..
Out of hundreds and hundreds of accents that exist in the world, our Malaysian accent made it to the top 50 as determined by a survey conducted by Big 7 Travel Media – an online platform that appears to have a 1.5 million audience.
Overtaking the Japanese, Chinese and New York accent – which come in at the 42nd, 43rd and 44th places respectively, the Malaysian accent falls right behind the Austrian accent at 39th place as it is “becoming increasingly Americanised”.
Topping the charts at number one, the New Zealand accent was named the sexiest in the world.
“To a novice ear, the New Zealand accent might sound just like the Australian accent, but Big 7 Travel readers disagree,” the website read.
“The ‘Newzild’ dialect is outrageously charming. The sexiest accent in the world? It’s official.”
Meanwhile, the “Queen’s English”, which is described on the website as “clear, clipped and completely posh”, failed to make it to the top 10 as it sits at number 12.
Wahsieh, ang moh lang think we sound sexy wor. Damn shiok, right? Malaysia win liao.
