It did not take long for Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to take action against the illegal vendors dominating Dataran Merdeka, ‘tainting’ the view of the iconic and newly reopened Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad (BSAS).
In a statement released last night (18 February), DBKL confirmed that they had removed the vendors from the scene, reminding the public that Dataran Merdeka is strictly a no-trading zone.

Preserving heritage and cleanliness
On recent weekends, multiple beverage vendors were spotted outside BSAS. Footage of the scene soon circulated on social media, sparking displeasure among Malaysians who argued that the stalls tarnished the image and cleanliness of the historic landmark.
According to DBKL, the issue escalated on Valentine’s Night (Saturday, 14 February). City Hall officers have since confiscated items from the unauthorised traders and are now actively patrolling the area to observe any further misconduct.

DBKL highlighted that the no-trading rule is essential to preserve the image, heritage, and hygiene of the site, which remains a point of pride for both locals and tourists.
A call for public cooperation
The statement reads:
“DBKL urges visitors not to purchase from illegal vendors and to play a role in maintaining cleanliness and appreciating the beauty of the surroundings.
“The cooperation of all parties is greatly appreciated to ensure that Merdeka Square and its surrounding areas remain clean, safe, and pleasant to visit.”

Additionally, DBKL shared information on where visitors can legitimately purchase food and beverages. The 2026 Ramadan Bazaars at multiple locations across Kuala Lumpur commence today (19 February) and will run until 20 March.
