With all the chaos and inconvenience that comes with the recent frequent flooding happening all around Malaysia, it’s hard to imagine that one day, many of our towns and cities will be completely submerged in water.
An old tweet from 2019 is now going viral, as it showcases how rising sea levels will effect coastal cities in the future.
The Centre for Governance and Political Studies Twitter page shared the study, revealing which cities will be effected by 2050.
They wrote, “A new study shows how major cities in Malaysia will be below the sea level by 2050.”
Here are the states that will be effected:
- Perlis
- Kedah
- Penang
- Perak
- Negeri Sembilan
- Terengganu
- Pahang
- Kelantan
- Sarawak
Based on the study, here is what will happen in 2050:
- Alor Setar will become an island
- The area from Parit Buntar to Taiping will no longer be seen
- The North-South Highway (Lebuhraya Utara-Selatan) will sink
- Bagan Datoh, Teluk Intan and Kuala Selangor will disappear
- Port Klang will sink
- Shah Alam will shrink
- KLIA will be located next to a beach
- Muar will sink
- Pekan will sink
- Kuala Terengganu will shrink and become several islands
- Kuching, Sarawak will shrink and become several islands
The study used the CoastalDEM (Digital Elevation Models) model, which allegedly provides more accurate readings of the situation.
It is said that, on a global scale, the Asian population, at 70%, will be the most effected by the rising sea levels.
“Millions of Malaysians will be affected. Most people will be forced to move. Housing projects will be wasted, plantation lands will be damaged. A food shortage crisis will hit,”
“Not matter which party you support, corporate or NGO, this is the reality of our future,” they shared.
Other locations that are said to potentially disappear include Bangkok, Mumbai and Shanghai.
It’s so saddening and scary to think that this is going to be our future. Time to start saving for a houseboat.
