One negative behaviour that is common in many Asian countries is the culture of overworking, especially in the younger generation.

From students, to those who work, there seems to be a perception that the more you overwork, the greater the success you’ll have. But, it is also important to take care of your health.

Recently, Twitter user Izzati Rosdi shared her experience of overworking and urged people to stop romanticising the culture of overworking.

In her tweet, Izzati says, “I spent my 20s overworking and I missed a lot of things.”

“The craziest thing I’ve ever done? Stayed till 6am, went home to shower and went back to work 8:30am on the dot,” she added.

“Because back then, I feel like I need to prove something.”

She explained that although overworking got her to where she is today, she says that people should not follow in her footsteps.

“It was exhausting. I gained a lot of weight and it took a toll on my mental health,” she explained.

“When you die, no one’s gonna remember how you overworked yourself… So live a little.”

Malaysians shared their experiences with overworking

Her tweet has caught the attention of social media users and currently sits on over 14,300 likes and 8,800 shares.

Plenty of users took to the comments section to share their similar experiences and to urge others to stop overworking themselves.

“It is okay to strive in your career but know your limits.”

One user shared their experiences and said that, “I regret not spending more time with my loved ones. I just feel all that overworking was pointless.”

“When you are young, you don’t feel the effects but as your get older, you will realise and wonder why you overworked during your youth,” commented another user.

Another user said, “When you’re unable to perform, your company will let you go and find another candidate to fill your position. Not worth it.

Some users believe that overworking is a part of work culture

Meanwhile, some users argued that if they hadn’t overworked themselves whilst they were young, they would not have achieved the successes which they are currently enjoying.

I did all that in my 20s and happy about it. Gained lots of knowledge and experience within a short time. No regrets,” said a user.

Another commented, “I never regretted overworking in my 20s. I gained so much knowledge and experience and I had fun along the way.”

“Sometimes we have to overwork to please ourselves. Lately I’ve been staying back and forcing myself to finish work to achieve the targets,” said a netizen.

Although it is always good to work hard and to give it your all, we must always remember that our physical and mental health must always be kept in check.

What do you think? Is the habit of overworking needed in today’s workplaces or is it simply not worth it. Let us know in the comments.
